Counselling

What is counselling?

Counselling is somewhere for you to talk and share your problems. Counsellors listen carefully to what you have to say and how you feel, without giving advice or telling you what to do.

What about confidentiality?

The service is confidential in accordance with the Code of Standards and Ethics of the “British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy”. There are some limits to the level of confidentiality offered; your counsellor will be able to answer any questions you may have about this.

Who is counselling for?

Anyone who wants to talk over any issue. The service is open to both full and part time students, free of charge. Counselling is always at the request of a student, no one can be sent for counselling.

What can I talk about in counselling?

You can talk about anything with your counsellor, for example:

No problem is too small or too serious.

How do I make an appointment?

You can pick up an appointment request form and reply envelope at Student Centre reception and at main reception for both West Bridgford and Charnwood Centres. Alternatively you can phone 0115 914 6382, text 07804 226416 or email counsellors@snc.ac.uk. A Counsellor will try to contact you within 7 – 10 days of request; sometimes we may be able to contact you sooner than this.

The counselling service does not offer drop in or crisis appointments. However efforts will be made to support students in an emergency situation if possible. The main provision of the service is to offer regular prearranged counselling sessions.

How long do appointments last?

Usually about an hour, some people come once or twice, others make appointments every week for a term or longer. If you need to cancel an appointment please give us as much notice as possible. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, your counsellor may not be able to see you for that session.

Feedback and Complaints

After you have ended your counselling sessions, we would appreciate you completing a student evaluation form that you can download and email back to us, or pick a form up from the Student Centre and return it in an envelope. If you have any complaints, these can be made through the College’s complaints system or directly to the BACP.
