South Nottingham College launches ‘Channeling Positivity’ campaign

Justine and Kate

A teacher and student duo from South Nottingham College is aiming to become the first relay team to successfully swim the English Channel. The campaign entitled ‘Channeling Positivity’ was officially launched today with the College as main sponsor. Head of School for 14-19 provision, Justine Drury and part-time crafts student Kate Vines are both amateur swimmers and wanted to take on a personal challenge to show what ordinary people could achieve. The swim is scheduled to take place on 27 July 2011, a year to the day until the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

Justine said: “We both wanted to undertake a personal challenge and were inspired by the Olympics. We wanted to show that two fairly average women could achieve something pretty spectacular, without fundamentally having to change our lives – we still work, have busy home lives and all the training is fitted in around this.”

The campaign aims to raise awareness with College students as to how they can contribute to community life and the fulfilment that can be gained from broadening horizons outside of the classroom. It will seek to introduce outside influences to college life, to enable students to gain valuable life experiences alongside their academic learning, for a more rounded education.

The duo aim to raise money for charity through the swim, with College students voting for the charity they wish to support during enrolment and the first week of term. There will be opportunities for the students to fundraise themselves and be involved with Justine and Kate’s training. It is hoped that some will feel inspired to get involved with the charity and even take up their own personal challenges, with support from the college.

SNC Marketing Manager Chris Stephenson said: “When Kate and Justine came to us with their idea, it was an easy decision to decide to sponsor them. The College has long had an ethos of being about more than just a place of study – we want our students to be exposed to all kinds of life experiences, not just spend time in a classroom looking at the theory.” He continued: “This is the first time we have translated this ethos into one big idea with which the whole college community can be involved. We’re really keen to kick start the campaign, and are really excited to see what the students think and learn more about how they choose to get involved.”

Kate and Justine are already training for the swim, and to combine training with fundraising, they will be running the Robin Hood half marathon on Sunday 12th September wearing bathers, goggles and swimming hats. Follow their progress at www.channelingpositivity.com

South Nottingham College Student Scoops East Midlands FE Sports Volunteer of the Year Award 2010

South Nottingham College Student, Connor Hardy has been crowned East Midlands FE Sports Volunteer of the Year for 2010.

An impressive selection of applications were received for this year’s award which has been supported by AoC East Midlands, EMDA and England Hockey. Colleges from across the region were asked to put students forward for the award in order to recognise all their hard work in the voluntary sector throughout the year.

A panel which comprised of AoC East Midlands Sports Strategy Steering Group members, the Regional FE Sports Strategy Co-ordinator and a representative from Voluntary Action Leicester had the tough job of picking the overall winner. All commented that it was very challenging to pick the victor from such and impressive bunch of applications, however, they decided that the overall winner from South Nottingham College stood out above the rest.

Connor Hardy, 18, has completed 480+ hours of volunteering this year in a number of different sports and settings. He has also undertaken numerous coaching and leadership qualifications and has been an active member of the BCS National Ambassadors Programme. He has helped coach children and young people, led and organised competitions and provided advice on developing national volunteering programmes for young people. Connor has not only lent his skills to the college and the local community, but has also spent time in Belfast and South Africa helping to educate others through the College’s Balls to Poverty project.

Connor shocked the panel in just how much he has done in his spare time this year and is a deserved winner of the award and a credit to his college and the region. He was a special guest of England Hockey at the Champions Trophy held in Beeston, Nottingham on Wednesday 14th July in order to be presented with his awards.

Connor watched GB men narrowly defeated by Germany 3-2 before receiving his awards from England Hockey president Simon Mason and Regional Children & Young Peoples 2012 Legacy Co-ordinator Gaynor Nash. Both of which commented how impressed they were with all that Connor has done and achieved this year. He was presented with a Champions Trophy t-shirt donated by Zenith and vouchers by AoC East Midlands to reward him for all his hard work this year.

The East Midlands FE Sports Volunteer of the Year is part of the East Midlands FE Volunteering and Leadership programme which received the Inspire Mark earlier this year. The programme is unique to the Further Education sector in the East Midlands and looks to promote volunteering and leadership to students. The programme also helps to reward and provide incentives for students completing their hours of volunteering within their college, schools or local community.

New school will offer more choice for students

A new school which will offer exciting new learning opportunities for the young people of Cotgrave and Radcliffe-on-Trent is to be established in time for August 2011.

A partnership between Dayncourt School in Radcliffe-on-Trent and South Nottingham College will provide a radical education programme that will meet each student’s individual needs and make the most of their personal learning achievements. Students will be offered a broad range of vocational qualifications alongside the traditional academic curriculum, to suit their needs and interests. This will include joint post-16 and diploma courses.

South Nottingham College, one of the top 10 FE Colleges in England, aims to harness its experience and expertise in delivering an outstanding educational experience together with Dayncourt School’s academic strengths. The partnership will provide learners with a personalised learning approach focussing upon inspirational, dynamic teaching and a broad, flexible and dynamic curriculum which will encourage learners to become more independent and resilient and ultimately better prepare them for the challenges that lay ahead of them.

The partnership will also contribute to the community cohesion agenda through extended services and placing the school at the heart of the local communities by providing the local community with access to specialist services, access to adult learning, ICT and sports facilities and by acting as a catalyst for all stakeholders to bring the community together.

Tim Mitchell, head of Dayncourt School said:
“The partnership between Dayncourt School and South Nottingham College – which has been supported by the County Council - will provide a new school and put students at the very heart of what we are seeking to achieve. Each student will have a personalised programme of study, because this model recognises that every student is unique and learns at different rates. This proposal will secure the future of the school and provide flexible options for our students.”

Malcolm Cowgill, South Nottingham College Principal said:
“This is a unique opportunity for current and future learners in Radcliffe-on-Trent and Cotgrave to access the learning they need, when they need it, not when the system determines they should have it. At the College we are committed to ‘Success Through Learning’ and are dedicated to supporting the development of skills, attitude and knowledge to create positive citizens and active community participants.”

Coun Philip Owen, Cabinet member for children and young people’s services said: “This new arrangement will offer a range of opportunities to meet the needs of Dayncourt School’s young people. The school is also taking steps to guarantee its future and I look forward to seeing these plans come to fruition.”

The proposals mean that there will be a re-organisation of the school and staff are currently being consulted about any changes. The governing bodies of the school and the college have set up a joint committee to administer the future arrangements.

Nottingham jobless get chance to go for gold as Olympic and Paralympic volunteers

Personal Best Launch

Out of work people in Nottingham are being offered a chance to take part in an innovative training programme, inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to improve their job prospects.

After gaining new skills with South Nottingham College who are delivering the programme, graduates will also have a chance to apply to become one of the UK’s 70,000 Games-time volunteers.

The region’s Personal Best programme is offering to train up to 302 people in the East Midlands who are out of work or socially disadvantaged in order to raise their skills and improve their employability.

Funded by the region’s European Social Fund programme and backed by a partnership including the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) East Midlands, SkillsActive, Jobcentre Plus and the East Midlands Development Agency, the Personal Best programme was launched at East Midlands Development Agency on 19/11/2009.

Sue Peake, Skills Development Director, LSC East Midlands, said:
“This is an exciting training opportunity that is focused on raising skills levels and motivating out of work people in Nottingham to improve their employability. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are inspirational events, where sportsmen and women get a chance to excel. The region’s Personal Best programme aims to encourage people who are out of work, or lack skills, to follow their example and take steps back to work.”

Joanna Mileham, Personal Best Assessor at South Nottingham College said:
“We are delighted to be part of the Personal Best programme. South Nottingham College is the conurbations main provider of sports programmes and we actively seek to support volunteers with qualifications such as this one. We hope it can provide a stepping stone for those volunteers who wish to progress.”

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee said:
“When working towards a personal best, whether it be on the track or in the workplace, training is essential as it helps develop skills and strengths which will take you to the next level. For participants in the East Midlands’ Personal Best programme, the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as the scheme enables people to make positive changes in their lives.”

The programme will primarily target adults who are out of work and have significant barriers to employment due to a lack of skills. They will be offered an opportunity to train for a Level 1 qualification in event volunteering and, after graduating from the scheme and following a successful application, will have a guaranteed interview with the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), to act as a Games-time volunteer. Those completing the course will also have the opportunity to volunteer at local sporting, cultural and community events.

The tailor-made course includes a variety of modules covering everything from customer service to public safety awareness and understanding what makes an effective volunteer, combined with 30 hours of practical volunteer experience. In addition, trainees will receive ongoing support and guidance from a team of Personal Best advisers, to improve their chances of getting a job and enhance their interview technique.

The region’s Personal Best programme and complementary courses are being run by three regional training coordinators: Leicester College, South Nottingham College and YMCA Derbyshire.

Students Dreaming of CD Success

From a young age growing up in the US, James Ellis loved hip-hop music but having his own track recorded and released to a worldwide audience seemed a distant dream. Until now…

18-year-old James is a second-year student on South Nottingham College’s BTEC National Diploma in Music Technology. James was born with Cerebral Palsy and is a wheelchair user. He was raised in New Jersey and moved to England in 2003. His illness has never dampened his enthusiasm for writing music and he is set to have a track featured on a new compilation album released by the College’s own label, SNC Recordings, in May 2010.

James wants to help inspire other people not to give up their dream.

He said: “There aren’t too many well-known hip-hop stars in wheelchairs as far as I know but my aim is to encourage others to follow their dream. I am really excited, as every artist wants to have their material released to a wider audience. This is a great real-life project to be involved in and we are all lucky to be part of it.”

South Nottingham College launched SNC Recordings in 2008 and released a debut album ‘Mechanical Evolution’ in June 2009 featuring original tracks written and performed by music students. The project is being overseen by tutor Trevor Bamford who runs locally-based label Nightbreed Recordings and has released 57 albums to date.

One of 2008 students, ‘Cookie Monster’ (Tony Cook) has since attracted interest from major labels including Warner Brothers and several artists have had tracks played on local and national radio.

The new album from SNC Recordings will be a duel release featuring 16 tracks on two separate albums released at the same time. One will feature rock and metal, the other hip-hop, DJ-ing and rap. Listeners will be able to choose to buy one or both albums depending on their musical taste. The album will be launched at 2 live gigs in Nottingham in June.

Tracks from Mechanical Evolution are now available to download from ITunes and Napster. For more information on digital downloads visit www.stormingthebase.com

Music student, Andrew Thompson said: "This is a great project to be working on as it really helps us understand exactly how the music industry works.”

Thomas is National 'Student of the Year 2009'

Tom Birch, third from the left, with his award

Former South Nottingham College student Thomas Birch has been named the Association of College’s (AoC) ‘Student of the Year’ 2009. He was presented his award at the AoC’s annual conference in Birmingham last night (Tuesday 17 November). It is the second time in three years a South Nottingham College student has won the award after Hairdressing student Debbie Ball was awarded the top prize in 2007.

Thomas Birch, aged 21, from Heanor, beat all odds of surviving an accident during his time as a Marine in Afghanistan. He suffered a severe head injury in an accident in his jeep in November 2006 and his chance of survival was touch and go. He was transferred, first, to Camp Bastion in Afghanistan and then his parents were flown out to Oman to the specialist Brain Injury Unit. Despite the seriousness of his injuries and the fact that he has no memory of his time in Afghanistan, Thomas has – after a lengthy rehabilitation – learned to walk and talk again.

Thomas enrolled at South Nottingham College in 2008 and has since completed level 2 and 3 Personal Trainer courses and is one of four students to be shortlisted for the final from hundreds of entries from across the country.

Thomas has since worked as a personal trainer and devotes a lot of time volunteering for the charity, Headway, to help people who have suffered severe brain injuries, like himself, to realise that lives can be rebuilt and something can be made of life after suffering such a trauma.

Thomas said: “I was delighted to hear that I had been nominated in the first place but when I found out I had won, I was made up! It was a complete surprise and I hope my misfortune can be an inspiration to other people. I would like to thank all the staff at South Nottingham College for their support especially Bridgette Jones, Vickie Tring and Lisa Dzierzak.”

College lecturer Bridgette Jones said: “Thomas is a remarkable individual with drive, ambition and commitment to excel in his studies. His confidence grew massively from his time at South Nottingham College and I am very proud to have been one of his tutors."

Thomas’s dedication and commitment to learning was recognised by NIACE with an Outstanding Regional Individual Award during Adult Learners’ Week in May 2009.

Leading awarding body EDI accredited the Level 2 and 3 Personal Trainer course that Thomas completed at South Nottingham College.

Gareth Philips, Business Development Director at EDI, commented: “We would like to extend huge congratulations to Thomas for winning this prestigious award. Thomas is a worthy winner of this important accolade which highlights outstanding student achievement. Thomas is a true inspiration to other learners having beaten all the odds to excel after his accident.”

Pride of Britain Awards Logo

The Director of South Nottingham College’s Athlete Performance Programme, Joe Sargison, was named regional winner in the Midland’s ‘Pride of Britain’ awards and goes forward to ITV’s televised national grand final on the 7th October.

Watch the Central News interview with Joe here

Joe set up the charity Balls to Poverty in 2004 which sees College students distribute footballs and rugby balls on an annual tour to deprived townships in South Africa and provide coaching to thousands of school children. Since the project started, over 20,000 balls have been distributed helping more than 450,000 South Africans.

The project also encourages College students who have made the trip to become role models in their local communities in Nottingham to encourage youngsters to get involved in the project.

Joe said: “I am delighted and honoured to be representing our region in The Pride of Britain Awards in London. Whilst obviously appreciative of the accolade for myself, I feel it is a very significant milestone for the whole project and everyone that has been associated with it from the start in 2004. There are so many people who have had a great part to play from students, staff and partners in UK and South Africa to parents and members of the public across the East Midlands. The award will support us all in our aim to drive the project forward so that more young people can get involved and make their own contributions.”

Nottingham Forest FC chose the project to be their chosen charity for the 2009/10 season and hope to raise £100,000 over the season.

Balls to Poverty won an AOC (Association of Colleges) Beacon Award for innovation in 2007.

Extension for Language courses

South Nottingham College are allowing students an extra week to enrol on language courses. Following recent funding cuts, language provision locally is under threat so College staff have extended the enrolment deadline until Friday 2 October.

Places are still available on holiday languages and AS/A2 courses in French, Italian and Spanish as well as GCSE Spanish and Italian.

Head of School for Lifelong Learning Dave Buckley expressed concern that the impact of the cuts will be felt acutely by people who are looking to retrain. “Language and IT skills will help people compete for high value jobs in a very competitive global economy. At South Nottingham College, we recognise the importance of these skills hence our determination to protect our language courses.”

Sex Education Programme Nationally Commended

A sex and relationships programme for autistic students will run permanently at South Nottingham College after being hailed as a national benchmark.

Fiona Speirs, of Arnold, has tailored a programme for students with Asperger's syndrome, which is a condition on the autistic spectrum. Mrs Speirs was highly commended in the Pamela Sheridan Awards, a national prize for excellence in sex and relationships education run by the Family Planning Association (fpa).

The programme helps young people to form relationships and helps them to come to terms with Asperger's. By working in partnership with parents and carers the programme also explored sensitive issues such as safety on the internet, concepts of public and private behaviour and inappropriate use of sexual language.

Mrs Speirs said: "People with Asperger's are predominantly visual thinkers and need to be given access to the right information that is presented visually alongside verbal teaching. "It has enabled students to have a better awareness of their own sexuality and the social norms and laws that govern sexual expression with others."

The programme will now receive £250 of fpa resources.

Through tailored group and one-to-one sessions, it improved the self esteem and confidence of all nine students with Asperger's syndrome.

Terri Ryland, director of practice development at the fpa, said: "This is a great example of how to deliver a very specialised sex and relationships programme. The college and consultant used a range of resources and mediums to deliver to the group very effectively."

Fliss Ward, autism support coordinator at South Nottingham College, said: "The programme that Fiona delivered was great fun, lively and engaging and brightened up Monday mornings. The programme took time to explore all those aspects of sex and relationships that students with Asperger's syndrome often misunderstand or misinterpret. She built a rapport with students and encouraged openness and trust so that they talked and shared their ideas. After the programme finished, students realised that it was fine to talk to tutors and people that they trusted about relationship issues that confused them."

Asperger's syndrome affects the way people relate to and communicate with others. They may find it hard to make sense of unwritten social rules and to understand what others are thinking and feeling. Young people with the syndrome are often isolated from society, not knowing how to behave in social situations, and struggle to form relationships.

Alan Bicknell, head of support programmes at the National Autistic Society, said: "Asperger's syndrome can make young people extremely vulnerable and liable to be exploited. Suitable specialised support at the right time can make an enormous difference to people's lives. A course like this can give people the understanding and confidence to develop and maintain happy and healthy relationships."

SNC Sign Up To Lifelong Learning

Principal, governors and union reps signing the agreement

South Nottingham College have become one of the first colleges in the country to sign up to the Lifelong Learning Agreement, a commitment with Unison and University and College Union (UCU) to support training for all staff. The agreement was signed on Monday 13 July and runs initially for one year from September 2009.

Senior Managers at South Nottingham College are committed to train and develop all employees to enable them to fulfil their role. It is also an aspiration to raise educational achievement and lifelong learning so that every employee, whatever their age or starting point, can realise their full potential in learning, work and within the community. The College will appoint internal Union Learner Reps to identify staff training needs.

College Principal, Malcolm Cowgill said: “The agreement supports South Nottingham College’s commitment to the Skills Pledge, its training and development policy and the requirements of the Investors in People standard. It has been drawn up to reinforce the importance of workplace learning and to affirm the College’s commitment to lifelong learning for all of its staff as well as students.”

Notts Unison Branch Organiser Mike Scott said: “We’re delighted to have agreed this commitment to Lifelong Learning with the College and expect Unison members to be among the main beneficiaries. FE Colleges need to be about everyone learning, not just the students, and this is a massive step in the right direction. It will provide a wake-up call to those Colleges which haven’t yet recognised the potential of their staff.”

Mary Alys, Regional Manager unionlearn said: “unionlearn welcomes the signing of this learning agreement. The College is leading the way in the region in working with its own trade unions to open the doors to new learning opportunities for staff of all grades.”

College Rugby Programme Accredited

The team lining up with the presentation documentation

South Nottingham College have become the only college in Nottingham to be awarded “accredited college status” by the RFU (Rugby Football Union).

The award means the College have met the set criteria for a college delivering rugby union coaching covering standards of delivery, facilities, playing and coach education. The presentation took place on Monday 22 June at the College’s Ruddington Centre.

The College run a successful partnership with Nottingham Rugby through their Athlete Performance Programme run by Sport tutor and Nottingham forward Neil Fowkes. Nottingham Rugby’s Academy and Education Manager, Jon Widdowson also coaches. Student athletes receive professional coaching and play competitive games against colleges across the region. In the 18 months the programme has been running, College student Liam Mather has received a call-up for the English College’s national side. Some students from the programme have recently returned from South Africa where they took part in the College’s Balls to Poverty project distributing rugby balls and putting on coaching sessions for youngsters in South African townships.

Neil Fowkes said: “This award from the RFU gives the programme massive credibility as it rubber-stamps what we are doing. It will certainly help us attract the right kind of students to the programme in future years.”

Richard Marelli, Rugby union student liaison officer, Midlands East RFU said: “The accredited award scheme is operated in a partnership between the Rugby Football Union, British Colleges of Sport and the individual college attaining the prescribed criteria. It is based upon what has been achieved and not what is planed, therefore students and staff within the college are currently working to the standard needed to gain this award. The RFU and BCS offer a two-tiered award programme, Accredited and Beacon status. South Nottingham College has achieved the Accredited and it is hoped they will now strive for the next level of this national college programme that of Beacon award. The RFU place a strong emphasis on the need of players to receive a strong education in both academic subjects and trade skills along with a sound and robust player development programme with each of the award levels.”
