A Levels

A-Levels are the traditional university entrance examinations in England, based on in-depth study of 3 or 4 subjects. You should choose the subjects that are most relevant to what you intend to study at university

The course lasts for 2 years, starting in September each year.

We offer A-Levels specialising in Maths and Sciences, with the following subjects available to choose from:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Maths
  • Further Maths
  • Physics

All students will study compulsory English language classes as part of the programme to improve their IELTS score in preparation for university.

Trang Ngo

Trang Ngo studied A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, achieving 2 A* grades and 1 A. She also did AS-levels in Chemistry and Economics, for which she also achieved A grades, and is now studying MEng Design and Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Like Thuy Pham, Trang also gained a “High Achiever Scholarship”, offered by the University to Castle College students

Entry Requirements

You will need to have qualifications from your home country equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C. Please ask for the requirements specific to your country. You can also check the level of your qualifications using UK NARIC - www.naric.org.uk

You should have English lanaguage at IELTS 5.0 (5.5 if choosing Economics)

Assessment and grading

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course, with a combination of coursework and examinations. You must pass the first year (AS-Level) examinations to be able to progess to Year 2.

For each subject you will receive a grade from A to E. Most universities will require grades at A to C for entry to degree programmes, with the top universities asking for all As and Bs.

The College holds 2 external IELTS examinations per year in February and May and students will be entered as appropriate. Students can make their own arrangements for testing at other times at any of the recognised IELTS Testing Centres.

Progression

Most students choose to progress to a British university on completion of their A-levels. You will be offered advice and guidance on how to apply to university at the beginning of Year 2.
