Science

These courses are ideal for anyone seeking a career in science and technology.

A Levels

Full-time students who wish to take A Levels will choose 3 or 4 AS Levels in their first year, then proceed to 3 A Levels in their second year. A wide range of subjects is offered for students wishing to go on to higher education or into employment. All subjects are offered to school leavers and mature returners.

Access

The Access Programme is approved by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and leads to an Access to HE Diploma endorsed by the East Midlands Region Open College Network (OCNEMR).

A Level Biology (AQA)

You should have an interest in biology and science in general. It is helped by an enquiring mind, determination to succeed and an ability to maintain effort.

A Level Business Studies (AQA)

A Level Business is an academic route requiring the use of Business English. Regular out of class reading and research is essential. The course is classroom based, using electronic smart boards with small group exercises and the use of current topics in the news.

A Level Chemistry (AQA)

You should have an interest in science, an enquiring mind and a determination to succeed.

A Level Further Mathematics (Edexcel)

This course is suitable for those who achieved good results at GCSE Maths and are interested in furthering their mathematical knowledge and meeting the challenges of more demanding material.

A Level Mathematics (Edexcel)

It is suitable for anyone who has already achieved good results at GCSE level and is interested in meeting the challenges of more demanding material. There are two possible pathways for learners to choose from: A Level Pure/Mechanics or A Level Pure/Statistics

The Pure Maths is common to both and needs good skills in Algebra and Trigonometry, the Mechanics develops ideas involving acceleration, forces and energy whilst the Statistics develops ideas met in GCSE such as averages and standard deviation.

A Level Physics (AQA)

The aim of the course is to provide a better understanding of physics and its relevance to our lives.

A Levels Pathways Specialising in Science and Mathematics

Full-time students who wish to take A Levels will choose 3 AS Levels in their first year, then proceed to 3 A Levels in their second year. All full-time students have a personal tutor who will be responsible for their welfare and academic targets.

Access to Higher Education and Employment - Pre-Access (Level 2)

This qualification is intended for those who need to develop their skills and knowledge before progressing onto an Access to Higher Education Diploma.

Access to Higher Education and Employment: Business

The Access and Pre-Access programmes are designed for adults who may wish to return to education after a break. They provide a supportive academic programme that will prepare you for study in higher education or in developing a new career. The Access to HE Diploma courses are designed for people who wish to go to university but lack the usual qualifications, such as A levels and GCSEs.

Access to Higher Education and Employment: Careers in Education

The Access and Pre-Access programmes are designed for adults who may wish to return to education after a break. They provide a supportive academic programme that will prepare you for study in higher education or in developing a new career. The Access to HE Diploma courses are designed for people who wish to go to university but lack the usual qualifications, such as A levels and GCSEs.

Access to Higher Education and Employment: Criminology and Law

The Access and Pre-Access programmes are designed for adults who may wish to return to education after a break. Access to Higher Education and Employment: Social Sciences (incorporating Law)

The Access and Pre-Access programmes are designed for adults who may wish to return to education after a break. BTEC Diploma in Applied Science (Level 1)

This is a practical, work-related course where learners study in a realistic laboratory work environment. The course prepares students for progression for further science based qualifications. It also provides a sound foundation pathway for those wanting to enter the health and science professions. Learners will be expected to complete Functional Skills and a City & Guilds Qualification in Personal and Social Development which will build on their employability skills.

BTEC Diploma in Applied Science (Medical or Forensic Pathway) Level 2

This is a practical, work-related course where learners study in a realistic laboratory work environment. The course prepares students for progression for further science based qualifications. It also provides a pathway for those wanting to further develop their skills and knowledge within the health and science professions. Learners will be expected to complete Functional Skills.

BTEC Diploma in Horticulture (Level 2)

This is a practical work related course where learners study in realistic outdoor horticultural environments and provides a pathway for those wanting to further develop their skills and knowledge within the Horticulture professions. . It also develops and prepares learners for progression to BTEC level 3 Environmental Science. The course is the equivalent of four GCSEs (A to C) depending on whether you achieve passes, merits or distinctions in the units. A work placement is also required as part of the course and the learner is responsible for arranging this although the college does have contacts.

BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Applied, Medical or Forensic Pathway) (Level 3)

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science is offered as three separate pathways: Applied, Medical or Forensic, with common core units and pathway specific modules. These programmes are practically based, work related courses where students learn through assignments which are based on the use of science in realistic workplace situations. The qualification is recognised by both employers and Higher Education institutions. Classes are taught in well resourced laboratories and classrooms with multimedia facilities and access to wireless laptops. Students use “state of the art” data logging facilities and portable equipment used in hospitals and forensics labs, such as an ultra sound scanner, electrocardiograph machine and analytical Colourimeters. Forensics experts and medical science experts deliver the specialist units. This course will put students in a very strong position for progression into HE studies and employment. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A Levels which can be worth up to 360 UCAS points

BTEC Extended Diploma in Environmental Science

Environmental sustainability and related environmentally-based sectors are growing rapidly within the UK. The government has introduced relevant legislation and international agreements and protocols with an emphasis on reducing global warming, climate change, low carbon economy and the need for conservation. A need has also been identified to educate and train learners for employment within environmental sustainability based organisations and within a wide range of other related organisations.

HND in Applied Science

This Higher National Diploma (HND) is a nationally recognised qualification that equips individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed in employment within Biology and Chemistry based industries.
