Course Information:
This course is for those looking for a career in social care.
Entry Requirements:
Apprentices are usually 16-19 years old, but can be any age.
Apprentices must have secured a job for a minimum of 16 hours a week in a health or social care setting and be able to deliver personal care to users of the service, as this is essential for gathering evidence for the NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care. You need a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in Health and Social Care, plus Functional Skills in English, and Numeracy at Level 1. All applicants must attend interview and good references are required. Any offer of a place on the course is subject to Criminal Records Bureau clearance.
Course Content:
The core units of the NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care are: Communicate with, and complete records for individual; Support the health and safety of yourself and individual; Develop your knowledge and practice; Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and wellbeingof individuals. In addition you will complete 2 more optional units from a large choice, which are chosen according to your work setting. You will also complete the Employment Rights and Responsibilities workbook.
Assessment:
You will attend college one day a week until your portfolio is complete. To start with you will learn about your rights and responsibilities as an employee. and complete the Employment Rights and Responsibilities workbook. You will then have taught lessons for the underpinning knowledge, and workshops to compile your portfolio showing your understanding of this and evidence of the practical skills you have gained at work. This will be delivered in a workshop environment. You will be assessed in the workplace for your practical skills
Progression:
With a good tutor recommendation and good performance it is possible to progress onto NVQ Level 3. It is also possible to progress onto the BND Health and Social Care (Health or Care Pathway) as long as you:
complete your NVQ Level 2
achieved a Merit grade for the BTEC First Certificate or Diploma
have GCSE grade A* C in English Language, or Functional Skills English at Level 2.
For Health Pathway a grade C in Double Science GCSE is also required. Career opportunities immediately after this course include: Care assistant, support staff in health and social care settings. It is possible to work your way up to manage a care home through the NVQ route.
Additional Information:
You will be entitled to a minimum of £95 per week during the course. Students will be expected to buy a course textbook, and find their travel costs to work.
